A Note From Kellie

Most athletes do well working with their own schedule, knowing which races they’ll do, and training on a consistent basis. Having access to a coach is a relatively new thing, and if you’ve been involved in any type of racing scene whether it’s cycling, running or triathlons you’ve probably done most of your training with a group of friends. You’ve either won a race, won your age group or were satisfied with your results seeing some improvement along the way.

I started racing bikes in 1980, and having a coach wasn’t even an option. We did our best to hang on to the back of the pack, and were told that if we kept riding with this group we would eventually get strong enough to stay with them allowing us to race. Women’s racing was almost non-existent, so we would just try to see how many laps we could stay with the Catagory I men. There were 3 Categories for the men, and to my knowledge it was never organized enough to have 3 different levels race since everyone considered themselves the fastest out there.

Fortunately, things have changed. Spending many years training, overtraining, and getting frustrated with never really reaching what I felt was my full potential motivated me into coaching. I’ve been coaching for 15 years now. Coaching isn’t just about designing a structured program. It’s about communication and trust, and this comes with time. Each year I learn something different from each athlete that I work with.
